Seth took her hand and caressed it with the other. “That

doesn’t matter. He made his choice when he had sex with

you, and he shares the responsibility—and the rights—here.

For what it’s worth, Tracy, I would’ve been proud to be the

father of our child. I’m sure your child will turn out as

handsome and strong as his mother is beautiful and smart.”

Suddenly Tracy broke down in tears, and Seth wrapped

his arms around the young girl in dire straits. “Oh, Seth, I’m

so afraid.” Seth’s hands rubbed up and down her back, and

he cooed comforting whispers in her ear, undoubtedly telling

her that she wasn’t alone and that he—in the role of her best

friend—would stand by her side through it all. Perry’s

estimation of Seth’s character rose through the roof.

Subtly, Perry withdrew from the doorway, going back up

the stairs, sitting silently on the top step, bending his knees

against his chest and hugging himself. He wasn’t so much

jealous as he felt lost in this other time, where Seth was

young enough to be with Perry but where he also had a life

with responsibilities that didn’t, and couldn’t, include him.

The memory of that heated kiss and passionate embrace

they’d shared would have to keep him warm for a long time.

Perry finally understood how hard it was for Seth to keep

hanging on to his self-control, having for one passing

heartbeat let go of his inhibitions, trepidations, and

misgivings.

“Perry, was it?” a raspy voice spoke from behind him,

startling him.

Scampering up on his feet, Perry turned to Kent Moore,

whose bright-blue eyes watched him warmly. “Yes, sir.”

“Please, call me Kent. Sir makes me feel like a drill

sergeant.” Kent chuckled, waving a hand through the air in

front of him.

Perry smiled. “All right, Kent.”

Kent peered behind him down the stairs, concern

marring his features. “Is everything all right with Seth?”
